A picturesque hill station - Matheran

A picturesque hill station in the midst of beauty of nature…….

Matheran has been one of my most beloved destination since ages…. I remember when I was small I used to go with my family and cousins for weekends… After going to college I started going there with my friends….

Matheran literally means “Forest on top”. Located on the western ghats, Matheran is one of the few places where vehicals are not allowed making this hillstation different from others… A visit to this place takes you back in the age where there were no vehicals… well this is my point of view….

This time I had been to Matheran with my fiancé Atul on 24th of July… Matheran is his favorite destination as well… Since monsoon had already started we decided to enjoy this place in rains…. We decided that we will hire a cab to go till Dasturi Naka… The journey upto the Naka itself is a delightful experience… The clean crisp air greets you as the road goes uphill in serpentine manner. The splendor of Matheran lies in the countryside.

By the time we reached Matheran, it had started raining heavily… It was simply beautiful… From Dasturi Naka we decided to walk to Matheran soaking in the wild ravishing landscape. As soon as we crossed the entry point, we had this funny experience with monkey… When Atul was about to keep his wallet in his pocket, this little fella came from nowhere and snatched his wallet from Atul’s hands… It happened so quickly that we couldn’t do anything… Luckily the monkey lost his interest in the wallet and through it back at us…. But truly speaking it was fun watching Atul trying to persuade the monkey to return his wallet …… We followed the tracks as it provides the panoramic view of the reddish mountain range.

We didn’t had anything particular idea as what all points to visit… So after reaching Matheran we just decided to roam like “Vela” people….. We started going towards “Charlotte Lake”..… The trees bending over the roads with their branches entwined with each other forms the canopy throughout. The entwined tress, the steep cliffs, meandering stream, hushed waterfall, red soil, and velvet moss provides you with ample of tranquility ….

The Lake itself is so beautiful that you just want to lay back and get soaked in the calm and peaceful ambience that envelops the lake….. Here we had “chai” sitting on the “katta” of one of the “taparis”….

While deciding where to go, I realized that I have never been on one of the roads, so we started going in that direction…. The road was going through a thick dark forest…. By this time the rain was pouring very heavily and the thick mist rolled in from nowhere…. Well, I don’t know whether it was a mist or bunch of clouds which funneled up through the valley and were passing through Matheran…. Whatever may be the scenario, it was beautiful and I was awe struck….. The visibility was suddenly reduced to few feet…. It was like I was in some fairy land…… It was just WOW!!!!!!!

After roaming in this fairy land, we started feeling hungry… So we were on our way back to Bazaar to have our lunch…. Well, after walking a considerable distance, we realized that we were kinda lost…. So at one point we asked this old granny to guide us to bazaar. Thanks to her, we ended up at “Belvedere point”…. This was the cherry on top of the cake, kinda situation. It was really beautiful…. We couldn’t see the mountain ranges… All we could see a thick white carpet of clouds and all we could enjoy was the serenity and solitude this place offered…..Apart from our conversation or the gust of wind in the treetops or the music of the rains, there are no noise….. I cant describe how beautiful experience was this standing at this point in words….. One has to experience it personally……

After lunch we started our journey back home…. Though none of us wished to come back…. We came back home with a beautiful experience and lot of appreciation towards nature……
